Collabs:
2021 brought us so many collaborations within the fashion space, but only now are we beginning to see these pieces on the street. Gucci and Balenciaga joined forces for their revolutionary “Hacker” collection, featuring many of the classic shapes from one of the brands reimagined with the logo or patterns of the other. Among the strongest bags in the collection were Balenciaga’s iconic “City” bag crafted in Gucci’s monogram canvas, a Gucci “Jackie” bag featuring the white Balenciaga logo written atop the Gucci canvas, and lastly, Balenciaga’s ever-popular “Hourglass” bag done in Gucci monogram. The latter of which quickly found its way into my wardrobe as it made my heart skip a beat. Following the smashing success of Gucci and Balenciaga’s collaboration, Versace and Fendi decided to get in on the action. The two iconic brands presented their collection with a show at Gianni Versace’s home. The collection is the definition of Maximalism and according to some, it was almost too much. The accessories in particular are the boldest I’ve seen from any brand. Among the bags was a
Fendi “Twin” tote in the iconic Versace gold “Baroque” print layed over the Fendi “Zucca”. A multicolor “Zucca” pattern crystal embellished “Baguette” with the Versace “Medusa” logo on the clasp and a thick gold chain strap stole my heart right away and I am counting down the days until it makes its way into my handbag wardrobe.
Continued Nostalgia
The past few years have resurrected some of our favorite handbags from years past. Beginning with the Dior “Saddle” bag, Gucci “Jackie” and most recently the Prada “Re-Edition”, brands are bringing back their most popular bags with new and exciting twists and the trend is continuing into the new year. Mulberry is bringing back its “Alexa” bag. Named for Alexa Chung, the bag found itself on the arm of every it-girl during the mid to late 2000s. For its revival, Mulberry has added a mini size to the “Alexa” line as well as adding gold metallic and pink suede versions. Chloe has brought back their rugged and hearty “Edith” bag, also a favorite of the late 2000s. The new “Edith” is available in three sizes, the mini size being the perfect boho bag for every whimsical summer look. The showstopper of the “Edith” line, however, is the black medium “Edith” with brown braided whipstitching… a must-have piece for sure. What's the next bag to get a revival? My money is on the Fendi “Spy”
A Bit of Sparkle
I’ve said before that I feel many are making up for time lost due to COVID and are bringing more glamour to their style. Lately I’ve seen more embellished bags than ever before. Both sequin and crystal embellished bags are here, large and small. Prada has its well known crystal “Re-Edition” shoulder bag, but the most spectacular of its shiny offerings is the sequin “Signaux” bag. A medium-sized shoulder bag with both a zipper and a flap, the “Signaux” is a perfect everyday bag, and the addition of sequins makes the bag a true showstopper. Balenciaga has introduced a crystal embellished version of its mini “Hourglass” bag. The tiny top-handle is the perfect piece for a night on the town. Lastly, Fendi has reintroduced sequin “Baguette” bags. The most iconic of which being the purple sequin edition known for its appearance on Sex and the City. The new purple sequin “Baguette” is an updated version of the classic featuring both long and short straps, making it all the more versatile.
