Paris, France – September 26th, 2019: Enigmatic designer Rick Owens’ showed his Spring-Summer 2020 surrounding a pool on the Palais De Tokyo in Paris. Black-robed figures conjured bubbles from the pool that floated around the runway throughout the show. Spring-Summer 2020 was far and away the most avant-garde of Owens’ recent collections. Having worn and collected Rick Owens pieces for years, I consider myself a devoted fan of the brand but even so this collection was avant-garde. While in total the looks may have looked outlandish, when deconstructed the looks were comprised of very wearable pieces that were quintessentially Rick Owens. Leather and sex appeal were everywhere as always when it comes to Rick Owens. Models wore leather headpieces reminiscent of Egyptian mummies along with massively structural belts and alienesque hair and makeup. Underneath it all were low-cut black jersey dresses with high slits and draped jersey tops for which Owens is so well known. Perhaps less expected was the appearance of ballgowns toward the end of the collection. In both yellow and black, Owens’ ball gowns had strong shoulders and rigid bodices that would look at home on any red carpet. Rick Owens proved he is still on the cutting edge for Spring-Summer 2020 and that he is as loyal to his customers as they are to him, designing pieces that will surely find a home in every edgy fashionista’s wardrobe.
